Christopher Watts sits in court for his sentencing hearing at the Weld County Courthouse on Monday. He bagged three consecutive life sentences for his triple-homicide
A Colorado man who pleaded guilty to killing his pregnant wife and their two young daughters will die in prison. Christopher Watts was hit with three consecutive life sentences on Monday, and will not be eligible for parole.
“I could objectively say this is perhaps the most inhumane and vicious crime I have handled out of the thousands of cases I have seen,” Weld County District Judge Marcelo Kopcow said before handing out the sentences.
In court Monday, District Attorney Rourke revealed for the first time that Watts strangled his wife and smothered the two children, in August. He buried the bodies in an energy company’s facility, then went on TV to launch an emotional appeal for their safe return. Memorial for Shanann Watts and her daughters Bella and Celeste, all killed by their husband and father, Chris Watts
Christopher Watts, who lived with his family in Frederick, pleaded guilty earlier this month to three counts of murder, two counts of murdering a child, one count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body.
The bodies of 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste were found submerged in an oil tank, and Shanann Watts’ body was found buried nearby in a shallow grave.
Shanann’s father Frank Rzucek called Watts a “heartless monster” during Monday’s sentencing hearing.
“I trusted you to take care of them, not kill them,” Rzucek said. “And then you take them out like trash. You disgust me.
“You will never take the love they had for me.”
Sandra Onorati Rzucek, the mother of Shanann Watts, reads a statement on Monday.
Watts did not speak during the hearing, but one of his lawyers said he was “sincerely sorry.”
He was arrested for the murders after repeatedly going on TV to plead for the safe return of the family members, who had been missing for several days. He would later admit to killing Shanann Watts in a “rage,” but claimed his wife had killed their young children.
