A Philadelphia man whose baby was shot four times last month while he was trying to buy drugs with counterfeit money has been arrested and charged with child endangerment.
Nafes Monroe, 25, used his 11-month-old son, Yazeem Jenkins, as a “human shield” during the drug buy, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
He was arrested Saturday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person for having 11-month old Yazeem Jenkins in the car with him when his actions drew gunfire.
The baby was in the backseat of Monroe’s car, along with his girlfriend and another man, on Oct. 19 when a gunman opened fire into the vehicle. Yazeem was hit four times, including in the head and chest.

Shooter: Francisco Ortiz, 29, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in the shooting of baby Nazeem Jenkins.

Monroe drove the baby to a house, then dropped him off at the hospital and fled, where he remains in critical condition, according to the Inquirer.
“He was using counterfeit money to purchase drugs, knowing that counterfeit money is something that is very upsetting to drug dealers, and when they find out they are being burned with counterfeit money, they act violently,” Anthony Voci, head of the district attorney’s Homicide Unit, said.

“Our investigation has led us to believe that he intentionally had his child with him when he was making such types of purchases, with the idea or belief that if someone saw that he had a child in the car, that they would not fire upon him. A ‘human shield’ is probably the term that I would use.”

In a statement to ABC 6, Yazeem’s mother called the entire situation “not fair.”
“He’s innocent, so precious, and his smile will brighten up anyone’s day,” she said through a family spokesperson. “He’s such a bubbly kid. So loving and lovable. How could anyone be so heartless! Please do the right thing and help us find some form of closure or answers in this tragic situation. Help us find the shooter. I can’t eat or sleep. I need justice for my baby … For the coward who did this to him, you will pay, even if it not today or tomorrow. God will handle you accordingly.”
Francisco Ortiz, 29, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in the shooting. He was previously accused of supplying an AK-47 rifle that was used to kill a 2-year-old girl a day after Yazeem was shot.
