A teenager has been arrested for the murder of Tessa Majors, a Barnard College freshman who was stabbed on Wednesday in a mugging in a park in New York’s Upper Manhattan district.
The underage boy has not been named but CBS New York reports he is one of three suspects wanted for the crime.
The 13-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Thursday on weapons and trespassing charges after being found in a building where he did not live, the sources said.
The boy was wearing clothing which matched a description of one of Tessa’s attackers, the sources added.
Once in custody, the teen allegedly confessed that he and his friends tried to rob her and attacked her when she fought them.
The NYPD Deputy Commissioner’s Office is refusing to comment on or even confirm the arrest, but the suspect’s aunt has since spoken out, without naming herself or him, to insist he is innocent.
Authorities are questioning a second suspect as well.

The teenager crawled to a nearby security booth but collapsed and was later pronounced dead in the hospital.
Her family from Charlottesville, Virginia, are now in New York City.
The stabbing rocked the community at Barnard, an all-girls school, and has sent shock waves through nearby Columbia University too.

The slain college freshman, the grandniece of former NFL football player Johnny Majors, is from Charlottesville, Virginia. A budding musician who also had hopes of becoming a journalist, she had only been living in New York since August.
Her parents traveled from Charlottesville to New York on Thursday after learning the news.
They released a statement later in the evening to tell of their grief, saying: ‘We lost a very special, very talented, and very well-loved young woman.
‘Tess shone bright in this world and our hearts will never be the same.’
The teenager had only been in New York City since August, when she was dropped off at college by her mother. She was excited to start classes at the all-female Barnard College.
However students at the school said it was barely nightfall when she was attacked, and that they too would not have thought twice about entering the park at that time.
‘It could have been any one of us,’ one female student said on Thursday.

On Thursday, the park remained closed as crime scenes scoured for evidence. Divers were seen searching a pond in the park looking for clues.
At the time of his arrest on Friday the suspect was said to have been wearing a green jacket that was similar to the one worn by one of Tessa’s attackers.
Police sources described him as a known robbery suspect and said that they found a trail of blood at the apartment where he was found.
It was described as a hot bed of criminal activity.
He was among a trio of teens arrested after the killing o Thursday. He was however released without charge on Thursday, as were two other juveniles who were questioned in the presence of their parents.
Tessa Majors was walking down these steps to enter the park when she was attacked on Wednesday evening. After being stabbed, she crawled back up them to the security booth where a guard called emergency help
He was still wearing clothes that matched the description of the suspect, sources said. Police arrested him for criminal trespass and during a search found he was carrying a knife.
He was brought to the precinct on trespassing and weapons charges and then allegedly, confessed to the murder.
He told investigators he and two friends tried to rob Majors and they stabbed her, sources said.
The arresting detective said in court, that the trio teen armed robbers followed a man into the park but then decided not to rob him.
The 13-year-old claimed he watched his two friends choke and stab Tessa, take items from her pockets, and then all three ran off.
The suspect said one of his friends told him Tessa bit his finger, fighting back.
The suspect spoke in the presence of his uncle, as is required when interviewing a juvenile, and the suspect waived his right to remain silent, sources said.

Majors, originally from Virginia, moved to New York in the fall to attend Barnard College, a part of Columbia University. She was in a band and had an interest in journalism.
Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed on Thursday that detectives would resolve the crime quickly, while a $2,500 reward is being offered for information about the incident.
