A Jury later will determine the sentencing for a third person associated with the Perkins case. Melanie Curtin, 42, is facing a mandatory life sentence.
On December 3, 2021, a Livingston Parish jury convicted Melanie Curtin of aggravated rape and voyeurism in a 2014 sexual assault of an unconscious woman. Curtin and Dennis Perkins were co-conspirators in a sexual assault case.
Although married to different people at the time, the pair had been having an affair, prosecutors say.
The jury found Curtin, 42, guilty of the most serious possible charge of aggravated rape, which carries a penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole or reduced sentencing. The jury also found her guilty on the charge of video voyeurism.
Members of the jury, visibly shaken, came back into the court room several times to ask for clarification. Jurors asked to re-watch the harrowing 17-minute tape where Curtin and her lover, Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputy Dennis Perkins both raped an unconscious woman and took turns filming the assault.
After eight hours of deliberation, the jurors arrived at a unanimous verdict of GUILTY of aggravated rape.
Dennis Perkins who was then a narcotics detective is charged in the same case and is set to go on trial in May.
Investigators discovered the smoking gun video inside the home of Dennis Perkins as they were gathering evidence following his arrest for child rape in 2019.
Despite efforts by Curtin’s attorneys to exclude that devastating piece of evidence, a judge ruled in April 2021 that prosecutors could show the 2014 video at Curtin’s trial that shows Dennis Perkins and Curtin raping a drugged and incapacitated woman.
