A police bodycam has captured the final words of handcuffed black man who died in Canton, Ohio after police knelt on his back during an arrest.
Frank E Tyson, 53, died in police custody after being arrested face down on the floor of a social club last week Thursday.
Recently released police bodycam footage has now revealed that a restrained Tyson was telling the officers piled on his back as he lay on his face on the floor: ‘I can’t breathe,’ ‘I can’t breathe,’ mirroring the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis cops which led to worldwide wave of protests against race tinged police brutality, back in 2020.

The bodycam video of Tyson’s arrest was released on Wednesday and shows officers responding to a report of a crash and Tyson, from East Canton, Ohio, by a bar in a nearby American Veterans, [AMVETS], post.
The crash that happened around 8pm on April 18, involved a single car that destroyed a utility pole.
A passing motorist directed police to the bar after the driver allegedly, fled the scene of the crash.

Killed: This still, taken from Canton Police body camera video, shows the confrontation between Frank Tyson and the responding officers on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Canton, Ohio. He was dead shortly after

Body-camera footage from one of the pair arresting officers, Beau Schoenegge, shows a woman opening the door to the venue, who said: ‘Please get him out of here, now.’
Police grabbed Tyson, and he resisted being handcuffed and said repeatedly, ‘They’re trying to kill me’ and ‘Call the sheriff,’ as he was taken to the floor.
They restrained Tyson with one cop pinning the prone suspect with a knee on his back, who immediately told the officers he could not breathe. In response they told Tyson who was face down with his legs crossed on the carpeted floor that he was ‘fine, to calm down and to stop fighting’.
As the officers employed the prone restraint, a subjugation method which the US Department of Justice has warned police not to use since the mid-1990 because of the danger of positional asphyxia, they joked with bystanders, leafing through Tyson’s wallet before realizing he was in a medical crisis.

Five minutes after the body-camera footage recorded Tyson saying ‘I can’t breathe,’ one of the officers asked his colleague if Tyson had calmed down. The other replied, ‘He might be out.’
The video shows that Tyson did not move when an officer told him to stand and tried to roll him over. That’s when the officers shook the cuffed man and checked for a pulse.
Minutes later, after an officer is heard saying medics needed to ‘step it up’ because Tyson was not responding and they were unsure if there was a pulse, they began CPR.
The Canton police report about Tyson’s death was issued Friday states, ‘shortly after securing him,’ officers ‘recognized that Tyson had become unresponsive’ and that CPR was performed. Doses of Narcan were also administered before medics arrived. Tyson was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later.
