Four people were killed and 17 others were injured when multiple shooters opened fire Saturday evening in a bustling entertainment district in Birmingham, near the University of Alabama in what police now believe was a targeted “hit.”
Gunfire erupted in the Five Points South entertainment district outside Hush hookah and cigar lounge in Birmingham just after 11pm on Saturday night after the gunmen got out of their vehicle and began shooting. The suspects then got back in and drove away.
At least 22 people were injured. Two men and a woman were killed at the scene in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue, while a fourth male victim died in hospital.
By 7 PM on Sunday police released the police identified three of the fatalities as Anitra Holloman, 21, from Bessemer, Tahj Booker and Carlos McCain, both 27 from Birmingham, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr. 26.

According to the Sunday news release by police on Sunday, he gunmen used machine gun conversion devices to override the trigger mechanism on a gun, so it functions as a machine gun. More than 100 shell casings were recovered from the scene.
According to authorities the shooting was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident where multiple victims were caught in the crossfire – the shooters were carrying out a hit on one person and the other victims were caught in the crossfire: “Someone was willing to pay money to have that person killed,” Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said Sunday.
No arrests have been made and the gunmen remain at large as detectives are still “working to determine the intended target of the shooting,” the police department said in a Sunday news release.

The other gunshot victims with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to life-threatening were identified and treated at local hospitals.
A spokesperson for The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital said 11 of the victims, wwere being treated at the hospital.
Local authorities announced that they have reached out to the FBI and ATF for assistance.
Birmingham police have asked that businesses in the local area provide any surveillance footage they might have, and requested that the public reach out to them with any relevant information and streets in the surrounding area were blocked off as police continue their investigation.

Five Points South is a popular area known for its nightlife venues near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus.
Birmingham police spokesperson, officer Truman Fitzgerald, at Sundays press conference noted that mass shootings ‘have more to do with culture than they do criminality,’ adding that ‘we’re seeing far too many arguments being settled by bullets.’ 
“The priority is to find these shooters and get them off our streets,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said at a Sunday press conference.

Police believe Glock switches were used in the shooting. These devices give the ability to switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic when attached to the back of a Glock.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the ATF partnered with Birmingham’s police chief and mayor to launch ‘Operation Flip the Switch’ – a program to get Glock switches off the streets, reported WVTM.
‘Where we used to see a dozen or less shell casings on the scene, we’re seeing 75 to 100 or even more than 100 on a crime scene, because, as you’ll see after, shortly how quickly these rounds are fired from these weapons,’ Chief Scott Thurmond.
‘There’s a lot of damage that can be done very quickly because of these weapons. As the ATF just said, there’s no place for these things in our city or in our state or our country.’ 
Police said they were investigating alongside the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
They have asked anyone with information to contact the homicide division at the Birmingham Police Department or report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers. A fund of $50,000 has been set up for tips, leading to apprehending suspects.
