Former New Jersey senator Bob Menendez, 71, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking part in a bribery scheme that netted him gold bars, thousands in cash, a luxury car and more, the us Department of Justice announced.
Two New Jersey businessmen, Wael ‘Will’ Hana and Fred Daibes, who paid bribes to Menendez were sentenced to more than eight years, and seven years in prison, respectively.
The trio were found guilty of bribery, acting as foreign agents, and obstruction of justice.
The widespread bribery scheme, which involved the ex-senator’s Lebanese born wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, 58, as well as multiple businessmen, saw the senator handing out favors for those who could pay his price.
Prosecutors said he was bribed by New Jersey businessmen and did the bidding of Egypt and Qatar, U.S. federal prosecutors claimed.
The then powerful chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in July 2021, was found guilty on all 16 felony counts he faced for crimes related to the illegal favors he doled out.

It is the first time a senator has been found guilty of acting as a ‘foreign agent.’
The veteran lawmaker was facing up to 222 years in prison for his crimes.
It was reported that Menendez, an influential Democratic senator from New Jersey for nearly two decades before resigning in disgrace in August 2024, began weeping at the hearing.
‘Your honor, You have before you a chastened man,’ he told the judge, tearfully.

‘I have dedicated my entire life to the service of others,’ he continued. ‘I am far from a perfect man, but I believe in my half century of public service I have done more good than bad.’
Manhattan federal judge Sidney Stein unmoved by the apparent remorse, remarked: ‘Somewhere along the way you became, I’m sorry to say, a corrupt politician,’ Stein told the former senator.
Menendez used his high-profile position to help one man negotiate a contract with Egyptian officials, the federal attorneys argued.
And he used his to quash a New Jersey state investigation into another accomplice’s state insurance fraud case, they said.
During a June 2022 FBI raid of his Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, home authorities discovered 13 gold bars and close to $500,000 in cash stuffed in coats and shoes and stored in safes and closets.
At his trial the Democrat’s older sister claimed storing thousands of dollars of valuables haphazardly around the house was a ‘Cuban thing.’
His defense also attempted to note the 71-year-old hordes money because his family’s experience with Communism in Cuba before immigrating to the US, though Menendez himself was born in New York after his family had already arrived.

A Mercedes Benz convertible that Menendez and his wife received as part of the pay to play loot in the years-long bribery scheme. The auto was gifted by long-time donor to Menendez, Jose Uribe, who worked in the NJ insurance and trucking business.

In addition to the cash and gold, prosecutors also alleged that Nadine Menendez’s Mercedes-Benz was also a bribe – from Jose Uribe, who worked in the New Jersey insurance and trucking business.
Two of the New Jersey businessmen indicted alongside the Menendezes, a halal meat mogul Wael ‘Will’ Hana and real estate developer Fred Daibes also were sentenced on Wednesday to 8 and 7 years respectively.
A third New Jersey businessman Jose Uribe, a former insurance broker, pled guilty to seven counts, including conspiracy to commit bribery and tax evasion in the case in early 2024, and has since testified that he bribed the Menendezes.
‘I agreed with Nadine Menendez and other people to provide a car for Nadine in order to get the power and influence of Mr. Menendez,’ Uribe told the court.
