Police arrived on Monday to responding to the 10.02am 911 call on Wednesday Feb. 20, found Margaux Whittemore, 32, was lying dead and naked on her mother-in-law’s driveway in Readfield, Maine.
When officers arrived her husband Samuel Whittemore, 34, had fled, but he did not get far before a state trooper collared him, and is now behind bars charged with murder.
Whitmore is accused of not only killing his yoga instructor wife, but almost his own mother Dorothy Whittemore, 67, who was found injured inside her home on Giles Road in Readfield.
Authorities said Samuel Whittemore and his wife lived in Belfast but were visiting his parents, but what transpired at the home is still a mystery. The couple appeared to be living on his 50ft yacht, the Havili, before they moved to nearby Belfast, Maine, last month.
Whittemore, a former SpaceX engineer and his French bride seemed to have the perfect life, sailing around the world in Instagram-worthy luxury. The killing happened not long after the couple returned home to Maine, from their globetrotting.

The suspect’s mother Dorothy Whittemore was rushed to Central Maine Medical Center in a critical condition.Her condition has since improved. While her injuries were not revealed, she is now listed as stable.
Samuel Whittemore’s father was not home at the time of his rampage, but he arrived home soon afterwards to the shocking scene. On Friday their son’s hearing was delayed due to what his lawyers called a ‘competency issue.’

After graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 2014 from MIT, where he was a member of the university’s cross country team, Whittemore worked at Elon Musk’s rocket company from 2015, before he took a break from November 2018 to July 2020, as he took off sailing the world.
The groom quit SpaceX where he worked as a senior avionics systems engineer in 2021, the same year he met his future bride and ventured into the world of consultancy.
Whittemore was transported to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta for an evaluation, but he has since been transported to the Kennebec County Jail, where he has been charged with murder.
