Utah college drop out charged with ‘aggravated murder’ of Charlie Kirk, will face death penalty if convicted – Tyler Robinson, 22, was turned him in by his dad after he allegedly confessed

Investigators on Thursday night arrested Utah resident Tyler Robinson, for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk who was killed while addressing a rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, on Wednesday Sept. 10  

The suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination has been identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old resident of Washington, Utah. 
Robinson was taken into custody around 11pm local time in southern Utah on Thursday night as the alleged assassin who shot Kirk, 31, during at a rally at Utah Valley University in Utah on Wednesday.  
President Trump announced the arrest in an appearance on Fox News, where he said that ‘someone very close’ to the suspect turned him in.
The suspect allegedly confessed to his father, veteran sheriff’s deputy Matt Robinson, who then contacted authorities and secured his son before law enforcement arrived to take him into custody. 
Officials believe Tyler Robinson acted alone. The college drop out who was raised Mormon, is expected to be charged with aggravated murder among other state charges, according to a probable cause affidavit released on Friday.
He will also face charges of felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice, according to the affidavit.
Authorities said at a press conference on Thursday night that Robinson will face the death penalty if convicted.

Robinson was taken into custody around 11pm local time at the his family’s $600,000 six-bedroom home in Washington, Utah – about 260 miles south of Kirk’s assassination in Orem in southern Utah on where he lived with his dad and his mother, Amber Robinson, who works for Intermountain Support Coordination Services. The social services provider is contracted by the state of Utah to help disabled people access care.
Tyler, the couple’s eldest son was a student at Utah State University on a scholarship but attended for only one semester in 2021.
The family’s social media profiles show Robinson, who has two younger brothers, often enjoying family vacations and sharing smiling selfies, including one of his mother celebrating her ‘genius’ son getting into college.

At a press conference on Friday morning, Utah Governor Spencer Cox began his remarks by declaring: ‘We got him.’ 
He said that investigators learned from Robinson’s family that he had become more politically aware in recent times, to the point that he recently expressed his dislike for Kirk, whom he said was ‘full of hate.’ 
Casings from the recovered murder weapon had several anti-fascist messages engraved on them, including one referencing the WW2 Italian anti-fascist song Bella Ciao, Cox said.

The governor revealed that Robinson’s roommate helped investigators by showing messages on Discord where the alleged killer talked about retrieving a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in a bush. The message also made references to engraved bullets and a scope.

Other images from the family’s social media history indicate that the suspects is been familiar with weapons from his childhood. In one photo he is seen posing with an M2 Browning 50. caliber machine gun

Social media accounts linked to Robinson’s family show he was often around guns as a child, including one image shared by his mother showing him posing with an M2 Browning 50. caliber machine gun. 
He also received a gun kit for Christmas, and was also seen wearing shoes that appeared to match those worn by the suspect in images released by investigators during the manhunt. 
In another image from Robinson’s mother’s social media from 2017, he was seen wearing a Donald Trump costume to Halloween.

The family’s social media profiles show Tyler Robinson often enjoying family vacations and sharing smiling selfies. However the family said, in recent times he’d become increasingly politically conscious, including expressing a dislike for Kirk whom he said was ‘full of hate’ 

Gov. Cox described Kirk’s assassination as a ‘watershed moment’ in American history, but added: ‘The question is, what kind of watershed?’ 
Robinson’s arrest comes after a manhunt for the suspect stretched to over a day and a half , with officials previously offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to his capture.
Surveillance footage had been released showing a figure on top of a roof leaping from a building and sprinting into a nearby neighborhood after Kirk was shot from around 200 yards away.  
The conservative commentator was hit by a single bullet while speaking to a crowd at the public university in Orem on Wednesday afternoon.
The father-of-two, known for his fierce MAGA views and thrilling debates with college kids across the country, jerked his head and collapsed immediately after being hit by a shot in the neck.

The sniper according to authorities killed Kirk with a single shot fired from a higher elevation and a distance of about 200 yards from the courtyard where he was addressing a crowd of thousands

Successfully rappelling down from the sniper’s nest, the assassin fled into the wooded area, out the Utah Valley University campus and into a nearby neighborhood

The conservative influencer was answering a question about mass shootings mere seconds before he was struck. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
At Wednesday’s MAGA event Kirk, wearing a white t-shirt, was sitting inside a tented gazebo taking questions from attendees.
In the moments before the shot rang out, Kirk was asked how many mass shooters there had been over the past 10 years.
‘Counting or not counting gang violence?’ the commentator said, before lowering his microphone. 
He was shot less than a second later.

Screams were heard across the crowd of young people as those closest to Kirk rushed to his aid. 
UVU officials said the shot was fired from the top of the Losee Center, about 200 yards away from where Kirk was sitting on the college campus, supported with evidence of footage showing someone on a rooftop just moments before Charlie Kirk was shot. 
Kirk and his wife Erika wedded in 2021. The couple who celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary in May, share a daughter, three, and a 16-month-old son.   
Kirk who previously named on Forbes 30 under 30 list, was the youngest speaker at the Republican National Convention [RNC], in 2016. He was also the opening speaker at the 2020 RNC.

Kirk co-founder of the non-profit Turning Point USA in 2012 as a teenager, which he dubbed a ‘national student movement,’ garnered millions of social media followers.
The non-profit’s mission as stated is to ‘identify, educate, train and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government.’ 
The conservative activist served as a personal aide to Donald Trump Jr during a general election campaign, and then in 2024, the non-profit increased their staff from 400 to 1,000 to ‘chase the vote’ in swing states. 
Kirk was also one of the earliest advocates for Vice President JD Vance, then a junior senator for Ohio, to serve as Trump’s running mate. 
‘I’m going to put my power behind JD for whatever I can,’ Kirk said.
‘That is a very good chapter two to the MAGA story that we’re writing.’

The manhunt for the gunman who assassinated Kirk stretched out to over a day and a half. Ultimately it ended around 11 PM on Thursday night after the suspect was turned in by his own dad

The non-profit also strove to encourage the restoration of ‘traditional American values like patriotism, respect for life, liberty, family, and fiscal responsibility.’
Kirk garnered much of his online notoriety for his ‘prove me wrong’ table, and in 2024 alone saw 15 billion views across multiple social media platforms. 
In the last year, dedicated around 200 hours at more than 60 colleges for his ‘prove me wrong’ events.
He was well known among young voters for his ‘populist nationalist’ worldviews on issues such as immigration, gender and politics. 

Trump led tributes to Kirk after he was shot, ordering the American flag to be flown at half mast. Kirk served as a personal aide to Donald Trump during the 2016 general election campaign. In 2024, his non-profit hired staff of 1,000 to ‘chase the vote’ in swing states 

In his efforts to educate his young base saw Kirk found the Turning Point Academy, which provides a ‘pro-American’ education to more than 250 partners. 
He even turned to faith and began Turning Point Faith, which collaborates with more than 3,700 congregations encouraging ‘biblical citizenship,’ the outlet reported. 
His work was heavily involved with students at colleges and university’s across the country, as Turning Point supports student body president races and recruits precinct leadership teams. 
In 2026, the non-profit had goals to renew or begin 1,000 college chapters and 1,650 high school chapters under the name ‘Club America.’  
But Kirk’s work within the MAGA realm was not confined to Turning Point, as he also authored four books and has been featured on-screen and in writing across multiple media outlets.
