On Thursday, the New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations called on the NYPD to investigate whether bias could be a motive in the attack. Khanam was wearing Muslim attire when she was killed, according to the group.
Before she was knifed, her husband, who suffers from asthma, had stopped to catch his breath, and she continued towards home without him.
Suddenly, the husband heard a scream and ran to his wife, the sources said. He found her bleeding with a piece of the knife still sticking out of her chest and called 911.
Nothing was stolen from the victim, who was carrying packages home, sources said.

Police recovered surveillance video near the crime scene which show the couple walking separately while another shows a man running, sources said.Investigators are still searching for a motive but believe the incident may have started as an attempted robbery. There may have been more than one suspect involved in her killing, sources said.
Khanam’s nephew works as a transit cop, according to the NYPD Muslim Officers Society, which announced on Twitter that the woman was a relative of one of its members.

On Aug. 13, Queens imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and a friend, Thara Uddin, 65, were shot to death at Liberty Ave. and 79th St. in Ozone Park, Queens. Cops arrested Oscar Morel, 35, for what prosecutors called the “cold-blooded assassination.”
Police investigated the case as a hate crime but have yet to uncover a motive.
“Because of the recent killings of Muslims in Queens, and because of the growing number of anti-Muslim incidents nationwide resulting from the increasing Islamophobia in American society, we urge the NYPD to investigate a possible bias motive for this murder,” CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said Thursday of Khanam’s slaying.
