Cateresa Matthews was 14 when she was raped and murdered in November 1991. A year later, five teenaged boys were arrested, convicted, and sent to prison.
At the point of their conviction in 1992, Wilson Pierce, Illinois State Police, noted: “It’s a shame that the youth have very little remorse for the loss of life”.
The reason for their apathy was the fact that they did not commit the crime. the conviction was overturned anthey were set free in 2011. Three of them already spent 18 years in prison, on the strength of coerced confessions.
They successfully sued claiming they were railroaded by police who overlooked the real killer, a man they identify as a convicted sex offender from Dixmoor, paroled shortly before the crime

The DNA evidence against Randolph was discovered five years ago, but authorities did not bring charges against the sex offender until now.
“I kept meeting with them and meeting with them, and they said they were investigating,” Cateresa’s mother Theresa Matthews said, Wednesday.
“They said, ‘We don’t have enough evidence.’ And I said, ‘What more do you need? You have the DNA.’ It just didn’t make any sense.”
Apparently Randolph “with much bravado,”  recently made statements in prison to incriminating himself in the 1991 rape and murder of Cateresa who vanished after leaving her grandmother’s home. Her body was found three weeks later.

Lawyers for three of the five asked for DNA testing in 2009. Dixmoor cops could not find the evidence and the testing was delayed. However, by 2011, the “Dixmoore Five” were cleared.
Three of the five — Robert Taylor, James Harden and Jonathan Barr — spent nearly 20 years in prison before release.
“The police had reassured me that they were the ones,” Theresa Matthews said. “It disappointed me when they were the wrong guys. I thought everything was over with. It was really stressful to hear they were the wrong people. Then they didn’t charge this new person. I couldn’t understand it.”

The five’s lawsuit alleged that cops ignored evidence leading to Randolph and erronously focused on them, leading to wrongful convictions.
Theresa Matthews intends to be present at all of Randolph’s hearings.
“I’ll be there at every last one, unless the good Lord takes me away,”  “That’s the only way I won’t be there. I’m Cateresa’s voice. I have to speak for her. I want justice for her. It’s up to me to speak for my baby.”
