A London man, Pawel Sroka, has been charged with the stabbing death of his live-in girlfriend. Joanna Trojniak was stabbed to death by her partner after a Post Office redirection notice tipped him off about her plans to leave him, London’s venerable court, the Old Bailey was told today.
Sroka, 34, is accused of stabbing 29-year-old Trojniak six times with a kitchen knife, including in the face and through the hand, in the living room of their home on March 23.
She was planning to leave Sroka after she had grown close to a colleague in Nando’s.
The prosecution told the court that the victim felt her relationship with her current boyfriend had run it’s course and was planning to move out of their shared residence. She had contacted the Post Office to forward her mail to a colleague’s address where she was planning to stay after leaving Pawel Sroka.
However, the defendant found a letter confirming the mail forwarding, which was sent to the home the couple shared in Croydon, south London. The incident sparked a row.
He stabbed her six times, Jurors were  told. He then slashed her once, before turning the knife on himself then calling emergency responders to tell them his girlfriend had been stabbed, the court heard.
Sroka has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, citing loss of control, but denies murder.

About an hour and a half later, local residents saw him in the car in a nearby street crying for help.
David Jeremy said: “Help in the form of police and paramedics arrived, and they were able to treat him medically, take him to hospital and ensure that he survived. Noting that
by Wednesday the March 23rd, the relationship between this defendant and Trojniak was coming to an end.
Trojniak  had moved on with  someone with whom she worked, at Nando’s in Colliers Wood. She had confided in friends and colleagues in the weeks leading up to her death that
Leaving Mr Sroka, was not something that she relished. She told them she feared an aggressive reaction
She worried that he would not accept it. She worried that he would track her down, and make life difficult for her.
“She was scared of him, and what he might be capable of doing”
Continuing, Jeremy told the court that a week before her death, Trojniak had a discussion with her manager at work, and told him she planned to run away.
“She wasn’t simply going to have to leave. She was going to have to run away, and conceal her tracks,” recalling that her previous attempt to break up with Sroka led to his locking her in a room and becoming aggressive.

When her manager asked her why she did not just walk out and leave, her responded “are you crazy, he will kill me”. She went on to repeat her fears to other friends, as well.
To avoid possible repercussion, she wanted to ensure that he wouldn’t be able to find out where she had gone, she therefore arranged with the Post Office to forward her mail to the address of some of her colleagues from work.
“Unfortunately, the Post Office’s confirmation of this arrangement was mailed to her current address.”
