Female crime story buff arrested Thursday for killing and dismembering a woman in South Korea, ‘to see what it was like for real’

Jung Yoo-jung confessed Friday to the murder of an unnamed freelance tutor in southern port city of Busan

She posed as a ninth-grader seeking private English tutoring to gain access and attack the woman in her home

She then dismembered the victim and packed some of the parts in a suitcase that she dumped in a river, while the remaining parts were recovered from her home

“Jung was found to have premeditated the crime driven by a desire to kill someone after she became obsessed with murder from TV programs and books,” police said

A young crime story buff who has admitted to killing and dismembering another woman, says she murdered her victim ‘out of curiosity’ to see what it was like, police in the South Korea’s southern port city of Busan said Thursday.
Busan police said the woman, who was arrested Wednesday, was engrossed in crime stories and wanted to see what murder would be like, real life. 
Unemployed high school graduate, Jung Yoo-jung, 23, has confessed to the murder of an unnamed freelance tutor and was indicted for the crime on Friday.
The young crime story fanatic had previously told police she killed her victim following an argument, The Chosunilbo reported, but officers soon found contradictions in her story. After being urged by her family to tell the truth, Jung confessed to police.
The alleged killer triggered public backlash after she reportedly, admitted that she killed the victim with no personal connection, just out of her curiosity about murder.
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency disclosed her name, age and facial photo on Thursday in consideration of the seriousness and brutality of her crime.
Police noted that Jung has been unemployed since graduating high school five years ago. She also has not had any personal relationships since and has intensively researched homicide cases online, on TV programs and novels since early 2023.
Authorities confirmed that they were conducting tests to determine whether she is considered a psychopath: ‘Jung was found to have premeditated the crime driven by a desire to kill someone after she became obsessed with murder from TV programs and books,’ a police spokesperson said.
Local daily, The Chosunilbo, quotes a Busan police spokesperson as saying that ‘Jung also said she feels sorry for what she did,’ adding that they ‘are conducting tests to see if she is a psychopath.’

Based on evidence, authorities believe the murder and dismemberment were carefully planned.
The alleged killer’s phone records show she had spent the previous three months scouring the internet for tips on how to hide a dead body.
Jung’s s library record, indicates that in the preceding months she borrowed a number of crime stories, supporting police theory that she used crime novels and television programs as research.
Having honed in on her target using an app for private tutors to connect with parent, Jung contacted the victim posing as the mother of a ninth grader interested in learning English.
They pair agreed that the daughter could come to the tutor’s house for a consultation two days later.
The predator then bought a school uniform online to complete her masquerade and pose as the alleged daughter. However, once she entered the woman’s home, she launched a knife attack.

‘Jung is short, and with the uniform on, the victim probably mistook her for a middle-school student,’ Police said.
Following up on her plan, the killer next went to a nearby supermarket where she bought rolls of large bin bags and bottles of bleach.
After dismembering the homeowner, Jung placed some of her body parts in a suitcase, took a taxi and dumped the suitcase in the Nakdong River in a secluded wooded area.
She tried to ‘make it look like the victim had disappeared,’ Police said, as they revealed that ‘Jung kept the victim’s mobile phone, ID card and wallet, attempting to commit a perfect crime.’
However, the taxi driver became suspicious and alerted authorities.

Police retrieved the case to find blood-stained clothes. The remaining body parts were found in Jung’s house.
‘Jung was a loner and a recluse who has been unemployed since graduating from high school five years ago,’ police said.
Jung who was seen being escorted out of the police detention center in the Busan central district on Friday morning, en route to her court arraignment, told reporters that she feels ‘really sorry for the victim’s family.’
To the question of why she tried to cover up the murder, she responded, ‘I think I was out of my mind.’
