Meanwhile a sister of one of the Gilgo Beach victims has revealed how the killer would torment the family by calling them on the phone and on at least seven occasions even used the victim’s personal cellphone.
The remains of Melissa Barthelemy was found on December 11, 2010, more than a year after she went missing. Two days later, the bodies of three other young women were found nearby along remote stretches of coastline on New York’s Long Island.
The man suspected to be behind the string of killings, Rex Heuermann, was taken into custody on Thursday night, at the home in Massapequa, Long Island, where he has lived since 1980 with his wife wife, Asa Ellerup, and their adult children.
After a year of tracking the prime suspect and methodically piling up evidence police arrested Heuermann, fearing he would strike again because he continued to patronize sex workers ‘at all hours of the night’, and was using burner phones to conceal his identity.

The latest developments proved unnerving for for the family of Melissa Barthelemy who earlier revealed that soon after her disappearance in 2009, the killer, several were made on Barthelemy’s own cellphone. He taunted her relatives, including one occasion where he admitted to murder.
In the 2020 interview Amanda also revealed the man had been keeping tabs on her in the aftermath of her sister’s murder: ‘He knew my name. He knew what I looked like.’
‘He had a strong accent, New York, Long Island. He was very monotone when he talked, like a middle-aged white guy.’
Police later traced the calls and found pings from her dead sister’s phone had been detected at Penn Station in Manhattan, close to where Heuermann’s office is located, according to the court documents, and also in Massapequa, where he lives.

Heuermann is also charged with the murder of Amber Lynn Costello, [left], 27, who vanished Sept 2, 2010. He’s the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes [right], 28, was last seen July 9, 2007, as well as six other women whose bodies were found in 2011.
Recalling the terrifying phone calls, Amanda said that the killer had called her to call her sister insulting names, referring to her sex work.
He admitted that “He killed Melissa after having sex with her,” Barthelemy’s sister, Amanda F. told PIX11.
“In the final call, he said he’d killed her,” recounts Amanda, who started receiving phone calls when she was only 15, adding, ‘He killed her; he raped her. Maybe one day he’d tell me where she was.’
A total of seven calls were made to the family with the final one being placed on August 26, 2009.
The dates of the calls were revealed during Heuermann’s criminal arraignment on Friday.
Barthelemy, a petite blonde woman, was the first of the serial killer’s victims to be found on Ocean Parkway in December 2010.

Barthelemy was an escort who had disappeared from the Bronx the year before.
The killer provided clues including strands of hair, the burlap used to wrap the bodies and a belt embossed with possible initials.
Heuermann was charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Authorities said he is also the ‘prime suspect’ in another killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes. All victims were strangled.

Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann, the so-called Gilgo Beach serial killer has been linked to at least 11 deaths, nine adult women all linked to the sex trade, a toddler and a man dressed in women’s clothing. The baby belonged to one of the female victims
To accelerate the search for Barthelemy’s remains, her family hired a psychic who provided tantalizing clues that would prove prophetic: She would be found in a shallow grave along the shore, near a sign with the letter G.
Eight of the victims remains were located along the barren stretch of Ocean Beach Parkway in Gilgo Beach, located on the South Shore of Long Island. Gilgo Beach would become the focal point of the long-stalled investigation into the discovery of 11 sets of remains, including that of a toddler, all discarded along the parkway that cuts the length of a thin strip of white sand, dirt, brambles and marshes known as Jones Beach Island.

However, investigators say the suspect might not be responsible for all of the deaths.

Heuermann says he is innocent, according to his lawyer.
