A Detroit woman and two teenagers have been arrested after allegedly befriending a new mom and kidnaping her 14-day-old twin babies. The trio have been charged in the kidnapping of 14-day-old Michigan newborn twins from their mother’s hotel room earlier this week.
Shantell Re-Azia Jones, Curtis Lee Slay and Davion Demetrius Sherman Chandler, are being charged each with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and three counts of larceny in a building, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Jones, 23, Slay, 18, and Chandler, 19, were charged after stealing the infants from a hotel.

Four suspects were taken into custody within hours of recovering the infants. However, a charging decision regarding the unidentified fourth suspect, a juvenile, is also being reviewed, prosecutors said.
The trio have been accused of snatching the new born twin boys when the 30-year-old mother was briefly out of the room prosecutors said. It is alleged that they had promised the new mother much-needed assistance with the children. Authorities allege Jones had befriended the babies’ mother, “all the while intending to steal them from their mother.
The twins and their parents had been staying at the hotel. Their father told the media this week they were at the hotel because someone had previously tried to break into their home.
The disappearance of the babies launched an Amber Alert across the region – an abduction emergency alert broadcast asking the general public to help find missing children considered to be in imminent danger.
But the infant twins, Montana Alexander Bridges and Matthew Jace Bridges, were returned unharmed to the Detroit Police Department the next morning. An Amber Alert was issued Monday morning and was canceled when the boys were dropped off at Detroit’s 9th Precinct before noon.

The trio of Jones, Slay, and Chandler reportedly, snatched the infant twins when the 30-year-old mother was briefly out of the room, then fled in this vehicle

The new mom called 911 just after 10pm on Sunday to report the missing children. At which point, Detroit Police issued the amber alert which was broadcast at 6am on Monday morning.
Jones had allegedly befriended the mother, offering help with her newborns, while her alleged accomplices, Chandler and Slay, assisted Jones with the abduction. The role of the juvenile was not stated.
The babies were dropped off at a precinct and then taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
‘The children were turned in to the Detroit Police Department on August 21, 2023, at 9.45am,’ police said.
“They are in good condition,” Detroit Police Chief James White said during a press conference Tuesday.
Jones, Chandler and Slay were each charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, three counts of larceny, and a single count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping on Thursday night.
With the charging decision regarding a juvenile under review, Jones, Chandler and Slay were slapped with the kidnapping-related charges.
All three have been denied bond and currently remain remanded in the Wayne County Jail, following their arraignment Thursday in Livonia’s 16th District Court, by Barbara Scherr, the presiding magistrate, who said the charges were ‘extremely serious’.
‘It is hard to imagine a worse scenario for a new mother,’ Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement.

The new mom called 911 immediately she noticed her babies were gone. Detroit police issued an Amber Alert for the vehicle and it’s occupants, warning that they kidnapped 14-day-old twin babies

‘The evidence in this case will show that these defendants engaged in a scheme to dupe the mother of these barely two-week-old babies.
‘They allegedly promised her some much-needed assistance to gain access to her children with the express intent on stealing them,’ the prosecutor added.
The attorney representing the trio at the arraignment said non of them had criminal history, adding that
Jones who is a single mother with two young daughters had turned herself in to Detroit police.
Her accomplices Chandler and Slay, however, live with their families in the city.
The three child kidnappers are expected to appear at a probable cause conference later this month on August 31.
