Photos have begun circulating online purportedly showing the body of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who Israeli officials believe may have been killed in an airstrike on Wednesday, October 16.
The Hamas leader was killed during an Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces announced Thursday.
One harrowing image shows the body of a Hamas terrorist believed to be Sinwar partially buried underneath rubble as he’s surrounded by three Israeli Defense Forces soldiers.
The slain terrorist can be seen “wearing a vest carrying grenades,” as well as a wristwatch that is commonly used by Hamas fighters, according to Israeli media.
The news filtered out that was a “high likelihood” Hamas leader and October 7, 2023, mastermind, Yahya Sinwar, is among three terrorists killed in a recent strike in Gaza, sources said Thursday – as the Israeli military worked to identify the bodies.
On October 7, nearly 3,000 Hamas fighters crossed into Israel by land, air and sea, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 Israeli and foreign hostages back to Gaza.

Members of Israel’s security cabinet were being informed that Sinwar was very likely dead following the targeted operation, two Israel officials with knowledge of the matter said.
Two of Israel’s broadcasters, KAN and N12 News, were also citing officials as saying Sinwar was among those taken out as photos of a man resembling the Hamas commander lying dead in rubble began circulating online.
It comes after the Israeli military earlier announced it was probing whether Sinwar had been killed in a targeted strike in Gaza.
The man in the photo bears a strong resemblance to the Hamas chief, with a CNN analysis showing that there are no signs that the image has been manipulated.
Saudi and Israeli media, citing unnamed sources, claim preliminary DNA and dental tests show Sinwar was indeed one of the men killed in Rafah.
The identity of the man, however, has yet to be confirmed by officials.
The Israeli military has opened a probe into the alleged death of the Hamas leader following reports that one of the three terrorists killed in a routine southern Gaza airstrike was the Hamas chief and Oct. 7 mastermind.
“During IDF operations in Gaza, three terrorists were eliminated,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
“The IDF and ISA [Israel Security Agency] are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed.”
President Joe Biden is being kept in the loop about the investigation into Sinwar’s alleged death while en route to Berlin, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.
Hamas has yet to confirm or deny reports on Sinwar’s death, simply writing on Telegram for people to be wary of “fake news” and to stick to the terror group’s official statements on social media.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that there were no signs that any hostages were injured in the blast that killed the three terrorists on Thursday.
Previous intelligence suggested Sinwar was hiding in Hamas’ tunnel system somewhere in southern Gaza surrounded by hostages to use as human shields.
