Border guards found a drugs baron trying to flee the country in a Hungarian lorry by using X-ray equipment at the Channel Tunnel. Tahir Mahmood, 30, went on the run after becoming spooked when the co-conspirators in his illegal enterprise were arrested. He was jailed for eight years for his role in a drugs ring that harboured almost a million pounds worth of heroin, operating throughout England and Scotland.

Mahmood was discovered by the border control team at the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone, Kent, in October, after evading police for a month.His fellow drug dealers Ajmal Aziz, 34, of Halifax and Alan Gee, 28, of Middlesborough, were also jailed for 10-and-a-half and eight years respectively at Leeds Crown Court.
