When Sanchez reached Mission Avenue, she accelerated and her car barreled into the victim. The victim was a known transient in the area. Officers believe he was walking to or from Brother Benno, a local soup kitchen.  It was unclear if the victim was in the street or on the footpath at the time of the collision.
Responding paramedics and officers pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Officers found his shoes, keys wallet, identification and pants in the street, as well as part of the car’s windshield.
The impact tore off one of the man’s legs, which flew through a back window, landing on the trunk of the vehicle. What remained of the man’s body flipped onto the windshield, shattering the glass and leaving him “impaled into the vehicle” with the top his head lying on the passenger seat.

The body stuck on the windshield, head first, however did not deter Sanchez who, kept driving with the corpse lodged in her windshield. She even drove up onto the footpath and crashed through some landscaping before she stopped in a cul-de-sac, jumped out and alerted someone in a nearby home.
She then went home and told her husband, who called the Oceanside Police Department.
An eye witness to the hit Edwin Esparza said:
“There’s no words to really describe it. I mean, just seeing that up close and personal, it’s kind of traumatizing in a way” .
Investigators arrested Sanchez after she confessed to driving while intoxicated and charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
