The twin-engine turboprop plane lost radio contact with the control tower some 37 miles east of Eleuthera, Bahamas, officials and relatives said.
The MU-2B plane was destined for the Florida town of Titusville after departing Borinquen about 11 a.m., officials said.
The plane was being piloted by Blumin’s partner Nathan Ulrich, an engineer who was married to actress Rae Dawn Chong from 2011 to 2014. The entrepreneur has been described by family and acquaintances as an excellent pilot, suggesting a mishap would likely have been caused by equipment malfunction.
“He’s an excellent pilot. You couldn’t get a better pilot,” said ex-wife, Chong.
“I’ve flown many hundreds of miles with him. It had to be a plane issue.”
“The whole thing is horrible,” Chong, 56, added. “I’m in shock.”
Ulrich’s parents only found out about their son’s disappearance from a reporter’s Tuesday afternoon phone call.
“That’s very troubling,” his father Gael Urlich said after learning the news.
Pilot Nathan Ulrich, of New Hampshire, and Jennifer Blumin of New York, who is the Founder and CEO of event management firm, Skylight, were identified as two of the two adults onboard.
Blumin’s sons, Phineas, four, and two-year-old Theodore, were also on the plane, authorities confirmed. As of 2015, Blumin was married to James Ramsey, a principal of the design studio Raad. Ramsey is the father of the boys.
The US Coast Guard says the twin-engine MU-2B turboprop, manufactured by Mitsubishi, was 37 miles east of the island of Eleuthera on Monday when air traffic control in Miami lost radar and radio contact with the plane around 2.10pm.

The US Coast Guard of the Southeast tweeted that the search is taking place 37 miles east of Eleuthera, Bahamas.
The airplane departed Borinquen, Puerto Rico, at approximately 11am Monday and never made it to its destination of Titusville, along the northeastern coast of Florida.
Their plane was at about 24,000 feet when air traffic control lost contact.
‘There’s no indication of significant adverse weather at the time,’ said Lt Cmdr Ryan Kelly, a Coast Guard spokesman.
