Jewish gunman claims he shot at car with Jewish tourists in Miami after mistaking them for Palestinians – Mordechai Brafman is charged with attempted murder

Unfolding irony led to tragedy in Florida on Saturday when a gunman opened fire on tourists solely motivated by racist considerations. The shooter Jewish American, Mordechai Brafman, opened fire on two Israeli Jews after mistaking them for Palestinians, according to authorities, sending them to the hospital after an encounter Saturday night in Miami Beach, police said. 
Brafman, 27, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder after opening fire on Ari Rabi and his father on Saturday. According to police, the gunman unleashed a fusillade with a semiautomatic handgun at the father and son visiting from two Israeli.
According to arrest documents, Brafman while in custody allegedly told officers he believed the two men were Palestinian.

WSVN reported that the father and son were stopped on Alton Road when Brafman drove by them at around 9:30pm. 
Police said Brafman then got out of his car and opened fire on the two, before driving to a home a few minutes away where officers took him into custody. The shooter reportedly unleashed 17 shots during the rampage. Images of the the victims’ Hyundai showed the vehicle riddled with bullet holes. 
Following the shooting, surveillance cameras captured footage of Rabi and his father driving to an apartment building before frantically trying to gain entry to the property.
After his arrest, Brafman told officers: ‘I saw two Palestinians and shot and killed both.’

After Brafman unleashed gunfire at their car, the injured pair of Ari Rabi and his father sought help at an apt. complex. Surveillance footage showed the duo attempting to gain access to a property following the shooting 

One bullet hit Rabi in the left shoulder while his father was grazed by a bullet in his left forearm. 
Speaking with CBS News on Monday, Rabi told the outlet that him and his father and had been visiting Miami Beach when they were fired upon. 
He said: ‘Boom, boom, boom, boom. I got hit in the shoulder. One of the bullets missed my father’s head.
‘Some guy thought we were Palestinians and he just started shooting. Seventeen bullets, only one hit.’
‘The last thing I want to say is thank God for life. A life shouldn’t just be taken away from anyone. 
‘It doesn’t matter who you are, what religion you are, or where you’re from. People should just live in peace.’
In a now deleted post to Facebook shortly after the incident, he also said: ‘My father and I went through a murder attempt against anti-Semitic background. 
‘They tried to murder us in the heart of Miami but the creator of the world is with us so he didn’t go.’

Brafman police said, unleashed a barrage of 17 shots at the father and son on Saturday night in Miami Beach. Fortunately, no one was killed. However, both occupants of the vehicle under attack were injured

His post added the comment ‘death to the Arabs’, which has since sparked backlash. 
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Florida chapter called for federal hate crime charges in the shooting. 
Nihad Awad, Cair’s national executive director, said: ‘It is deeply ironic and telling that both the alleged pro-Israel perpetrator and the pro-Israel victim in the Miami Beach shooting reportedly hold racist anti-Palestinian views.
‘This just the latest example of the hate targeting the Palestinian-American community in this country and Palestinians in their homeland. 
‘Policymakers in our nation should stop fomenting the anti-Palestinian hate that led to the genocide in Gaza and to hate crimes in America.’ 
Brafman gave his occupation as plumber to arresting officers, state records indicate he is the authorized representative of White Collar Plumbing. Interviewed last year following the vandalization of a bagel shop in Miami Beach that was flying the Israeli flag, Brafman said: ‘It’s absolutely abhorrent. I’d love to see some unity and people coming together and fighting less and being together more.’

Miami based plumber Mordechai Brafman was ‘experiencing a severe mental health emergency,’ defense attorney Dustin Tischler said in a statement

Following his appearance in court on Monday wearing a suicide vest, Brafman is currently being held on no bond inside Miami-Dade Corrections Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. with a pretrial detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, his attorney Dustin Tischler in a statement claimed his client was ‘experiencing a severe mental health emergency’. 
Tischler said: ‘It is believed that his ability to make sound judgments was significantly compromised. 
‘We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials and acknowledge the seriousness of the allegations.
‘We are also committed to working with healthcare professionals to ensure Mr. Brafman receives the appropriate and necessary treatment. Finally, we are deeply relieved that the victims are safe.’
