Five soldiers have been shot at Fort Stewart Army base in Georgia on Wednesday morning, prompting the base to issue an urgent locked down order for the surrounding area
One person was reportedly killed after a gunman opened fire on a US Army base in Georgia on Wednesday morning. The suspect who has been identified as serviceman Quornelius Radford, 28, opened fire at Fort Stewart base on around 11AM, wounding at least five soldiers.
The shooting happened in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. The wounded soldiers were treated on site and have since been moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment.
An urgent lock down was issued for the residents in the area of Fort Stewart who have been warned to seek shelter, stay inside and lock all windows and doors.Ā
Footage from the incident circulating on social media showed a number of soldiers seeking shelter as the active shooter warning was issued.Ā
The shooter struck the 2ABCT area of Fort Stewart, which includes the Wright and Evans Army Airfield.Ā Ā
Officials at local schools followed the army base in locking down the area, but said that there is ‘no immediate threat to the schools at this time.’Ā
The suspect reportedly, was taken into custody half an hour after the shooting began, around 11.35AM, Radford was arrested at a traffic stop for driving under the influence in May, said an official.

Fort Stewart is a US Army base around 40 miles south of Savannah, Georgia, and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. It hosts over 10,000 people including soldiers and their families.
The nearby Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle Schools are under lockdown.
