A 38-year-old man from Minnesota has been arrested for the murder of his wife 11 years after he told police an intruder broke into their home, grabbed his shotgun and shot her dead during a struggle. 
Nicholas Firkus was taken into custody on Wednesday on suspicion of murdering his 25-year-old wife Heidi in their home in St. Paul, more than a decade ago. Firkus was 27 at the time.
Police have not released details on what led to Firkus’ arrest in the cold case and his criminal complaint won’t be unsealed until later on Thursday. 
Jail records show Firkus, of Mounds View, which is about 15 minutes from St. Paul, was booked for second-degree intentional murder. 

Nicholas Firkus told police the intruder had grabbed his shotgun after breaking into their home and Heidi was struck in the back by a bullet as he struggled to regain possession of the firearm. He was booked Wednesday with was booked for second-degree intentional murder  


No one has ever been arrested over Heidi’s death but police insist they never stopped investigating.

On the day of the slaying, police had received two 911 calls reporting that someone was trying to break into the home.  
After Heidi was killed, her family said they found out the couple were supposed to be evicted from their home the day after the shooting.

At the time, Firkus told police the intruder had grabbed his shotgun after breaking in. 
Firkus said he briefly struggled with the intruder but the gun went off and a bullet struck Heidi in the back. 
He told investigators that the gun fired a second time and he suffered gunshot wounds to his thigh and groin.
Firkus said he was treated in the hospital for his injuries.

Nothing had been packed up in the home, according to police. 
Heidi’s parents said Firkus told them his wife knew about the eviction but they claimed she would have told them if she had known. 
A year into the murder investigation, homicide detectives revealed that Firkus had not been eliminated as a suspect in his wife’s murder. 
Heidi’s family issued a statement via police following news of the arrest, saying they were grateful for the development in their daughter’s case.

His attorney Joe Friedberg said at the time that Firkus was a victim and not the perpetrator. 
Friedberg, who is still representing Firkus, had no comment following his client’s arrest because he hadn’t yet seen the allegations against him.   
Heidi’s family issued a statement via police following news of the arrest, saying they were happy about the development in their daughter’s case. 
‘We’re extremely grateful for all those who have worked so hard and long to get the case to this point. And also for everyone who has prayed and stood beside us all these years,’ the family said. 
‘We are hopeful that these charges will finally bring out the truth and result in justice for Heidi. Even though we know we can’t have her back, we believe Heidi would want us to have the truth.
‘God is honored by truth. Heidi’s life and memory is further honored by truth.’ 
Firkus is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday. 
Heidi Firkus, who graduated from Roseville Area High School in 2003 and went to the University of Northwestern in Roseville, met Nicholas at church. The pair who both served as youth group leaders, were married at the church in 2005.
Two years after Heidi was killed, in August 2012, Nicholas Firkus remarried. He has been divorced in second marriage since 2019. The couple, who had children
